Starting your own recruitment business is not too difficult, for this reason it’s a great business to start (just like I did) and build either into a full-time job or a “side hustle”.
One downside is because it’s relatively easy to start one there is a lot of competition, as low barriers to enter usually creates a crowded market.
To greatly increase your chances of success and save you potentially thousands of dollars in costly mistakes, I’ve created a video training course that will guide you through all the steps. Check it out here.
Deciding on a Specialty
The first step to start your own recruitment business is to decide on a specialty. It’s best to start small, serving only a handful of job titles before expanding into more complicated positions.
I recommend choosing something from your own background, as this will help when you’re talking to potential new clients. For example, if your background is in IT, start by providing clients with Help Desk and Systems Admin type positions. Choose job titles that don’t require much experience as these will be easier to work with.
Basic Business Formation
You’ll need to register your business with the Secretary of State, request an IRS Employer ID number, and open a business checking account.
Make sure to have some kind of working agreement to protect you against bad actors and people that will ultimately waste your time.
Not sure how to tackle these steps and in what order? I’m here to help! Check out my video training class here.
Business Development
Once you’ve completed these steps, you’ll need to start calling businesses and asking if they need help with their hiring. From my earlier point on starting with positions you have experience with, this will also give you referrals that you can start with. Start with friends, old coworkers, friends-of-friends and similar to build your first client base.
When you get your first few clients then all the pieces will begin to fall into place. You’ll only need to repeat the cycle of finding new clients, sourcing candidates, and matching them together.
After doing this, you’ll gain confidence and realize the business value you provide. Then your pitch will be more natural and prospects will trust your abilities.
Does all of this seem overwhelming? It doesn’t have to be!
